There are 87 elementary and elementary/middle schools in the Boston Public School system. Some of these are Pilot schools and, accordingly, are not listed on this page but can be found under the "Pilot Public Schools" tab.

Under Boston’s student assignment plan, the city is divided into three geographic “zones”—East, West, and North—for elementary and middle schools. Students may apply for:

*Schools in the zone in which they live

*Schools in other zones if the schools are within their “walk zone”

*"Citywide" K–8 and middle schools open to all students.

The BPS Website has many of the details. Read it!

If you want to send your student to an elementary that is within a mile of your home, you are likely to get your wish, as you have something called "Walk Zone Priority." But everything depends on the waiting list for that particular school. Often, you can send your children to another elementary school if it is in your "Zone." Again, it depends on how popular that school is with other families.

There is no way to apply for schools online, but you can "Express Pre-Register" here. Click on "Create a new account."

To apply, you must visit a Family Resource Center in person. Call first to make sure you bring the right type of identification.
